What makes digital systems trustworthy? This question was at the heart of the AIOTI Days 2026 in Florence, where industry leaders, researchers, and technology experts explored how AI, IoT, and Edge Computing are transforming the path from data collection to intelligent decision-making and why trust is becoming the key currency of the digital economy. One recurring theme was the importance of open standards and long-term reliability.

For those who could not join us in Florence, we have summarized some of the event’s most valuable insights and takeaways. One message resonated throughout the conference: Trust does not start with AI, it starts with data quality, open standards, and resilient connectivity.

Philipp Miesen from the mioty Alliance highlighted that standardized technologies are essential for secure and future-proof solutions. This is particularly important for LPWAN deployments, where infrastructures are often expected to operate for a decade or more.

Trust, however, starts even earlier, with the data itself. Marc Avando Bedone from Asystom demonstrated how industrial IoT applications depend on trustworthy data collection from the very beginning. Reliable connectivity from the physical world through edge systems and into the cloud is the foundation for meaningful insights and sound business decisions.

Julian Studer from Loriot expanded on this by focusing on the business perspective. For him, successful IoT is ultimately about return on investment. A compelling example came from the insurance sector, where IoT enables organizations to move from “detect and repair” to “predict and prevent.” Faster AI-driven decisions based on real-world data help reduce claims, improve efficiency, and create better customer experiences.

A similar message came from Bernhard Niemann of Fraunhofer IIS, who emphasized that trust is determined in the very first mile of connectivity. Technology access, hardware flexibility, freedom from vendor lock-in, interoperability, and long-term availability together shape the trustworthiness of the entire digital value chain.

Looking at trust from an assessment perspective, Jasmin Cosic from DEKRA discussed how transparency must extend across every layer of a digital system, from sensors and connectivity to cloud services and AI applications. Technologies such as blockchain are already being used in some environments to make changes traceable and trust verifiable.

Complementing this perspective, Tom De Block from Datavoc reminded the audience that while the industry is racing toward AI, success still depends on the quality of the underlying data. Open standards and open-source approaches remain critical ingredients for trustworthy data ecosystems.

The event concluded with an inspiring real-world example presented by Semjon Schaefer from Swissphone. His South Tyrol use case demonstrated how IoT, AI, and Edge Computing create tangible value for society. A resilient communication network was deployed to remain operational during power outages and other critical situations. Thanks to mioty’s exceptional scalability, the same infrastructure can also support additional public service applications in the future.

Our key takeaway from Florence: Trust begins with data collection, grows through open standards and interoperability, and ultimately delivers value through real-world deployments. This unique combination of technology, innovation, and practical implementation made AIOTI Days 2026 one of Europe’s most insightful IoT events of the year.

Anyone looking to help shape the future of AI, IoT, and Edge Computing should keep AIOTI Days 2027 firmly on their radar. We will, of course, keep you informed through the mioty newsletter with timely updates on the next edition, including key dates, program highlights, and the topics that matter most to the IoT community.
