24/7 insights to reduce water losses
Challenges
GAIA S.p.A., a public water utility in Italy, set out to transform its network monitoring approach to tackle water scarcity and the growing impact of climate change.
The goal was clear: gain continuous, high-resolution visibility across the network to significantly reduce water losses.
Yet the scale of operations posed a major challenge. Serving over 400,000 inhabitants, managing around 500 treatment facilities, and operating more than 7,000 km of network, GAIA relied on just four meter readings per year, making timely leak detection and actionable insights virtually impossible.

Solution
GAIA implemented an AMI network based on mioty®4OMS, the mioty standard tailored for metering applications. The solution enables secure, long-range hourly data transmission, feeding both a Meter Data Management platform and a dedicated Water Loss Management application.
The deployment combines 73,000 HYDRUS 2.0 smart water meters with IZAR IoT GATEWAY Premium devices, ensuring continuous and highly reliable data flow. Designed for performance and multi-connectivity, the infrastructure can integrate not only water meters but also district heating systems and additional IoT sensors.
