The mioty editorial team (met) reached out to a pioneer who has been with mioty since its inception: Alex Kahlig, Vice President at ifm and member of the board of the mioty alliance, public & regulatory affairs.

Q1: What is your role at the mioty Alliance and how can members reach you?
Alex:
I’m currently serving as Chairman of the Board of the mioty Alliance and I’m now in my second term. Together with the rest of the board, I focus on the strategic direction of the Alliance. Where we want to go, how we initiate and develop cooperations, and how our working groups are moving forward. Our members can always reach out to me by email, and of course by phone if they have my number.

Q2: Talking IoT, what initially sparked your passion for the Internet of Things?
Alex:
I think it really started in my personal life. I’m a bit of a smart home nerd at home, I have more than 1,400 IoT devices. I’ve been digitalizing my entire house, and because it’s an older building without the right cabling, everything had to work wirelessly. That brought me very deeply into the world of IoT. Later, through my work at a sensor manufacturer, this private passion connected with industrial sensor technology and that’s where it really became something I’m passionate about.

Q3: What do you enjoy outside of work that keeps you curious and creative?
Alex:
Outside of work, I really enjoy building and making things with my hands, especially working with wood. It started during my studies, when we built our own vacuum press and began pressing skateboards, and I still do that today, along with many other projects. I also love renovating and improving our house! And, of course, spending time with my son, who gives me a completely different perspective on the world. Creating things that are tangible, functional, and real. For me, it’s the perfect balance to a job that often happens mostly in front of a screen. Building, developing, and shaping ideas physically gives me energy back and keeps me curious and creative.

Q4: If you could place a sensor anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
Alex: If I could place a sensor anywhere in the world, I would place it on or around my cats. Not as a classic collar tracker. I would love to understand what they actually do all day, especially when they are not at home or even sleep somewhere else. The sensor would show me their location, but also a few vital signs like breathing rate or heartbeat. Not because I want to control them, but because I’m genuinely curious about their secret little world – and it would be reassuring to know they are safe and healthy.

Q5: What is your favourite superpower of the mioty technology?
Alex:
For me, it’s the incredible penetration power, even from underground or from a basement. The best example is a mioty sensor I have in my garden cistern. It’s in the underground, inside a reinforced concrete shaft with a heavy steel cover that I can only lift with both hands. And still, the sensor transmits reliably from there. That’s really impressive – and something I just don’t get with other wireless technologies.
