The mioty editorial team (met) reached out to a pioneer who has been with mioty since its inception: Thomas Kauppert from Diehl Metering, Vice Chairman of the Technical Committee.

met: What is your role at the IoT Alliance, and how can members reach you?

Thomas: I’m Thomas Kaupert, Vice Chairman of the Technical Committee, supporting Josef Bernhard. I actively participate in and lead several task forces aimed at driving key initiatives forward, particularly around interoperability.

met: Speaking of IoT, what initially sparked your passion for the Internet of Things?

Thomas: My background is in communication technologies, which has always fascinated me because communication is the foundation of our modern world. Connecting things and enabling them to interact is what truly inspires me.

met: Outside of work, what keeps you curious and creative?

Thomas: First and foremost, my two children, there is always something new to learn and discover through their eyes. My other big passion is watching football, specifically supporting Liverpool Football Club.

met: What is your favourite “superpower” of a mature technology?

Thomas: Seamless reliability straight out of the box. You simply install the devices and gateways, and everything just works without complex configurations. It’s resilient, easy to deploy, and requires virtually no ongoing maintenance.

met: If you could place a sensor anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Thomas: I would place a metering sensor near critical water sources. Water is fundamental to human life and our planet’s future, so we must monitor and protect our natural resources carefully.
