9 Powerful Reasons for OMS and mioty®

March 7, 2026

Open, reliable, sustainable, future-proof – OMS (Open Metering System) and mioty® set a new benchmark for robust smart metering. For both OMS and mioty®, the collaboration opens new doors. Together they expand their reach, attract new members, and create a compelling platform for utilities, cities, and solution providers looking to build the next generation of smart metering solutions.

“OMS and mioty® are a powerful match. OMS provides standardized, secure, and interoperable metering data models, while mioty® delivers an exceptionally robust and highly scalable LPWAN physical and link layer designed for environments with heavy interference and dense sensor deployments”, says Ulrich Eff, Spokesman of OMS Group e. V. Management Board and Head of Associations & Alliances at Diehl Metering GmbH.

9 compelling reasons for OMS – and 1 standout reason for choosing OMS and mioty® together:

Key advantages of OMS and mioty:

  • Interoperable data through standardized OMS payloads
  • Extreme robustness thanks to mioty®’s Telegram Splitting technology
  • High scalability for large‑scale deployments with thousands of devices
  • Strong performance in interference‑heavy environments
  • Future‑proof architecture for modern smart metering and industrial IoT

9 Reasons for OMS

  1. OMS is a future-proof communication standard as it is based on European standards (EN 13757) and is supported by the industry.
  2. Free choice of supplier: OMS meters from different manufacturers can be easily combined, because of OMS certification.
  3. Measurement of different media (Water, Electricity, Gas and Thermal Energy).
  4. The meter fleet is fully compatible and interoperable.
  5. Planning security: the investment in the meter fleet retains its value in the long term.
  6. Positioning as an expert for cross-manufacturer meter communication.
  7. Direct communication with the meters designed for this purpose: reading for consumption billing, controlling meters, locating defective meters or leaks, switching off meters, etc.
  8. OMS meters enable the introduction of smart grids to reduce energy consumption and improve the integration of renewable energies.
  9. ISO/IEC 14543-3 = EN 50090 (KNX) has integrated OMS into their profile for data visualization (consumption display) and the connection of building automation (smart home) at the consumer. KNX installations can thus gain added value from OMS meters without great effort, as they use the OMS protocol according to EN13757-4 for wireless communication just like the OMS meters.

Open and standardized

OMS is the only open and standardized energy measurement system that integrates the consumption values of all energy sectors into one system: electricity, gas, thermal energy, water – in metering and submetering. In addition, OMS is compatible with the international communication standard for building technology KNX. This enables the direct integration of building automation, energy management, and smart home systems. Communication is based on the proven M-Bus standard. M-Bus was originally developed for remote reading of meters, and OMS extends this by creating a comprehensive, interoperable system that integrates multiple types of utility meters.

Together, OMS and mioty® unlock a new level of performance for smart metering: standardized data, ultra‑robust transmission, massive scalability, and long‑range efficiency – a future‑ready foundation for utilities and IoT providers aiming to modernize at speed and scale.
