February 10, 2026, Erlangen – At the E-world 2026 in Essen Annalena Zottmann, Business Development Manager at Diehl Metering, spoke with IoT consultant and knowledge transformer Gerhard Radtke. Both support “Simplify Smart Metering”, an initiative that aims to accelerate the rollout of digital metering systems and reduce technical hurdles. A key role is played by the question of which wireless technologies are scalable, interoperable, and resilient in the long term. Another crucial part is meter solutions developed on the basis of open standards. “This is essential for solutions designed to provide data over decades, and the only way to make investments completely future-proof. And for us in Europe, it is quite clear that we must build all essential infrastructures on the basis of technologies that are completely transparent”, Annalena Zottmann emphasizes. With its unique wireless communication protocol and integration into the latest generation of the OMS specification, mioty® could be a game-changer for smart cities and the metering world.
“Digital metering systems are becoming increasingly indispensable for the energy supply in Germany. Smart Metering provides more precise consumption data, facilitates grid control, and creates the basis for an energy system that is more heavily influenced by renewable and decentralized sources,” explains Gerhard Radtke. Authorities such as the Federal Network Agency and the Federal Ministry of Economics have pointed out for years that this database is necessary to operate networks stably and better predict load flows. At the same time, there is growing pressure to make metering infrastructures more resilient.
“For smart meter systems, this means that communication between thousands of metering points must function reliably and stably even under difficult conditions. The mioty® standard, which is standardized as ETSI specification TS 103 357 and was developed by Fraunhofer IIS for large metering and sensor networks, addresses exactly these requirements”, says Annalena Zottmann. Its robust transmission technology is designed to support many devices in parallel and tolerate interference better than classic LPWAN methods. With its patented telegram splitting technology for extreme interference resistance and very low power consumption, as well as the integration of its advanced IoT technology into the latest generation of the OMS specification for scalability and interoperability, mioty® meets the central needs of the initiative – and especially in real large smart metering projects. For example, since 2024, the regional energy supplier N-ERGIE in Nuremberg has been gradually replacing its customers’ conventional water meters with new water meters that are remotely read using mioty® – with many advantages, especially for SMEs.
